How to Activate a Tron Wallet – Required Before First Use
Every new Tron wallet address needs to be activated before it can be used for sending or receiving TRC20 tokens. Activation is a one-time process that happens automatically when the address first receives TRX.
Why Does Tron Require Wallet Activation?
Tron requires a minimum balance of 0.1 TRX to keep an account active. This is a network-level policy designed to prevent spam accounts. A new address that has never received TRX does not yet exist on the Tron blockchain — it only becomes visible and functional once it has received its first deposit.
How to Activate a Tron Wallet
Method 1 – Send TRX to the New Address
The simplest way to activate a new Tron address is to send at least 1 TRX to it from another wallet or exchange. Once the transaction is confirmed (usually within 30 seconds), the account is active and can receive all TRC20 tokens.
Method 2 – Activate Through a TRC20 Token Wallet (e.g., in Exodus)
Some wallets like Exodus allow you to activate your TRX address from within a TRC20 token wallet (like USDT). In Exodus, open your USDT TRC20 wallet, tap "Receive", select the Tron network, and if your TRX address is not yet active, you will see an "Activate" button. Tapping it sends a tiny 0.000001 TRX deposit to your TRX address, activating it automatically.
How to Check If Your Tron Wallet is Activated
You can verify activation status on TronScan (tronscan.org). Search for your wallet address. If the account exists on the blockchain, it is activated. If you see "Account does not exist", the address has not yet received its first TRX deposit and needs to be activated.
If you cannot see your USDT TRC20 balance in your wallet, your Tron account may be deactivated due to a TRX balance below 0.1 TRX. Top up with a small amount of TRX to reactivate.
What Happens If Your TRX Balance Falls Below 0.1 TRX?
If your TRX balance drops below 0.1 TRX, your Tron account may become deactivated. This does not mean your tokens are lost — your USDT and other tokens remain in the wallet. However, you will not be able to view balances via API or blockchain explorer until you top up with more TRX. To reactivate, simply send any amount of TRX to your address to bring the balance above 0.1 TRX.
Activating a Tron Wallet on Hardware Wallets (Ledger)
If you are using a Ledger hardware wallet with TronScan, you must send at least 0.1 TRX to your Ledger Tron receive address before you can view your TRC20 token balances. Connect your Ledger to TronScan, navigate to the "Receive" section, copy your TRX address, and send TRX from an exchange or another wallet. Once the transaction confirms, your Ledger Tron account will be fully activated.
Account Creation Fee
When you send TRX to a brand new address for the first time, the network charges a small account creation fee of approximately 0.1 TRX, which is deducted from the sending transaction. This fee goes to the Tron network and pays for the on-chain storage of the new account data.
